After watching a lot of students do this, the same seven mistakes keep showing up. So here's the list of traps, because I'd rather you read it than live it.
One: comparing grades across systems directly. A 3.0 GPA, A-levels, and the French baccalaureate are not the same currency. Every country converts differently, and universities publish conversion tables for a reason. Use them.
Two: ignoring foundation years. The UK, Australia and others run foundation or pathway programs that change the entry math completely. Your profile might miss direct entry and still sail into a foundation route. People treat these as plan B. Sometimes they're the plan.
Three: treating the English test as an afterthought. IELTS and TOEFL scores expire, usually after two years, and retakes take weeks to book. Students miss intakes over this constantly. It's the most boring reason to lose a year, which is probably why nobody plans for it.
Four: reading US acceptance rates as international acceptance rates. They are not the same number. Not even close at the selective schools.
Five: forgetting that Australia is expensive. Acceptance rate statistics for universities in Australia 2027 look friendly, and they are, but international tuition there is among the highest in the world. Friendly odds, unfriendly invoices. Do both columns of the math.
Six: skipping the visa math. Some countries make post-study work easy, others don't. The degree is half the decision. What happens after graduation is the other half.
Seven: building a list of ten dream schools and zero safeties. Every counselor says this. Nobody listens. Listen.
